A German tourist was tragically killed in a suspected terror attack in central Paris over the weekend, prompting German prosecutors to open an investigation into the incident. The attack, which took place near the iconic Eiffel Tower, is being treated as an act of terror by French authorities.

The incident occurred near the Quai de Grenelle on Saturday when the assailant, allegedly a member of a terrorist organization abroad, attacked a German couple with a knife. Sadly, a 23-year-old man lost his life in the attack while his companion sustained injuries.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin revealed that the suspect attempted to target two more individuals with a hammer, as he tried to flee from the police. The assailant was already known to French authorities, having pledged allegiance to the so-called "Islamic State" in a social media video. Additionally, he had been under close psychological surveillance due to mental health concerns.

The German investigation into the incident, led by federal prosecutors in Karlsruhe, will run parallel to the ongoing French probe led by anti-terror prosecutors. Authorities are considering charging the suspect with membership in a terrorist organization abroad, as well as murder.

Hans-Jakob Schindler, a senior director at the non-profit Counter Extremism Project (CEP), believes that this attack exemplifies a new method employed by terrorists – inspiring individuals online to carry out attacks rather than planning complex events. Schindler added that the Islamic State aims to inspire acts of terror in Europe, including Germany, in order to maintain its relevance and presence.

Terrorist attacks continue to be a growing concern across Europe, with this incident serving as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by authorities in combatting terrorism and maintaining public safety. As the investigations progress, international cooperation remains crucial in addressing this pressing issue.
