In a final flurry of claims made under New York state's "look-back window", disgraced former governor Andrew Cuomo has been accused of sexual assault. The late-night accusation comes amidst a wave of allegations against prominent figures, including music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs and current New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The "look-back window", which allowed victims to file claims for past incidents, closed at midnight.
According to the legal claim filed by his former executive assistant Brittany Commisso, Cuomo, who was forced to step down as governor in August 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct, allegedly subjected her to a range of inappropriate behaviors from 2019 to August 2021. These included "humiliating and demeaning tasks, hugs, kisses, sexual touching of the buttocks, and forcible touching of the breast." Commisso further alleges that the governor initiated a campaign of retaliation after she rejected his advances.
This is not the first time Cuomo has faced accusations of sexual misconduct. Commisso previously accused him of groping her inside the governor's mansion. In her claim, Commisso also alleges that when she reported the governor's behavior, the current Governor Kathy Hochul, who was then lieutenant governor, "demoted her" to the demeaning task of answering telephones.
The former governor is also facing a separate lawsuit filed by a former state trooper, who is one of 11 women to accuse Cuomo of sexual harassment or mistreatment during his time in office. Cuomo has consistently denied all the allegations against him.
Rita Glavin, a lawyer representing Cuomo, responded to Commisso's claims by calling them "provably false" and characterized them as an attempt to seek monetary gain.
The Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily extended the statute of limitations, made headlines last year when writer E Jean Carroll reasserted her claims of rape and defamation against former President Donald Trump. As the look-back window was closing, other high-profile figures such as Combs, Adams, and Cuomo faced similar accusations. Additional claims were also made against photographer Terry Richardson, music producer Jimmy Iovine, comedian Bill Cosby, and Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose.
As the legal process continues, the allegations against Cuomo mark another chapter in the ongoing reckoning surrounding sexual harassment and misconduct within positions of power.
