Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, aged 96, has entered hospice care at home, her family announced on Friday. Earlier this year, it was revealed that she has dementia. Similarly, former President Jimmy Carter, aged 99, is also receiving hospice care at their residence in Plains, Georgia.

In a statement released by their grandson Jason Carter, it was mentioned that the couple is spending quality time together with their family during this challenging period. The Carter family has requested privacy while expressing gratitude for the overwhelming kindness and support they have received.

Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter have been married for an incredible 77 years, with Jimmy Carter once stating that the moment she agreed to marry him was the best thing that ever happened in his life. At 99 years old, Jimmy Carter holds the distinction of being the oldest living American president.

Earlier this year, following a series of hospital stays, it was announced that Jimmy Carter would receive hospice care at home. In 2019, he endured a fall which left him with a black eye, and later suffered a fractured pelvis in a separate fall.

The Carters served as the first couple in the White House following Jimmy Carter's election as the 39th president of the United States in 1976. Their time in the White House came on the heels of the Watergate scandal when the Democrat defeated Republican President Gerald Ford. Jimmy Carter served a single term, ultimately losing to then-candidate Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential election.

As the nation learns of the Carters' hospice care, thoughts and well wishes from around the globe are pouring in, acknowledging the couple's remarkable impact on American history and extending support to their family during this challenging time.
