The FBI has joined the University of Michigan Police Department's investigation into former Wolverines assistant football coach, Matt Weiss, who was fired in January for alleged unauthorized computer access crimes at the school's football building. According to ESPN.com, Deputy Chief Melissa Overton confirmed the FBI's involvement and stated that the investigation is extensive, ongoing, and of utmost priority. The investigation spans multiple states.

Weiss, who served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Wolverines in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, has not been charged with any crime at this time. However, a letter obtained by the Associated Press reveals that Michigan's executive associate athletic director, Doug Gnodtke, informed Weiss that the school had evidence of his inappropriate access to accounts at Schembechler Hall, where the football offices are located.

Michigan terminated Weiss after he failed to attend a meeting to discuss the allegations of unauthorized account access. On January 5, a university employee reported fraudulent activity involving unauthorized access to university email accounts, according to the university police log.

Weiss, in an interview with ESPN's Pete Thamel in January, expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation. However, the University of Michigan police department spokesperson clarified that the Weiss investigation is separate from the NCAA's probe into off-campus scouting and signal stealing involving another staff member, Connor Stalions, who was associated with the program in 2021 before officially joining the staff in 2022.

The involvement of the FBI highlights the seriousness of the allegations against Weiss and the significance of the investigation. The authorities are diligently working to gather all necessary evidence and determine the extent of Weiss's alleged unauthorized access to accounts at Schembechler Hall.

As the investigation continues, both the University of Michigan police department and the FBI remain committed to uncovering any potential violations and ensuring the integrity of the university's computer systems. The outcome of the investigation will ultimately determine what further actions, if any, will be taken against Matt Weiss.
