In a surprising turn of events, Trent Williams' holdout has come with a hefty price tag, even after signing a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Williams, who had previously held out while with the Washington Football Team, recently re-signed with the 49ers as an unrestricted free agent. While his new contract includes increased numbers, with a boost of approximately $5 million over the next three years and additional guaranteed money, the holdout ended up costing him more than $5 million in fines that cannot be waived.

The ordeal began when Williams, considered a veteran player, missed out on the mandatory training camp for the 49ers, which attracted a non-waivable fine of $50,000 for each day of absence. According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), these penalties persisted until the Sunday prior to the start of the regular season, totaling 40 days and amounting to a staggering $2 million in fines.

Unfortunately for Williams, his holdout also resulted in missing three preseason games, resulting in an additional loss of $1.113 million for each game not played, summing up to a fine of $3.34 million. The CBA clearly states that these fines must be paid in full and cannot be reduced or waived by the club.

With a grand total of $5.34 million in fines, which must be collected without any possibility of waiver, Williams' holdout ended up costing him dearly. Despite the anticipated increase in his new contract, estimated to be around $5 million, it is evident that the holdout still took a significant financial toll on the talented lineman, amounting to over $300,000.

The series of events surrounding Trent Williams' holdout serves as a cautionary tale for players considering such actions in the future. Although he ultimately secured a new deal with the 49ers, the fines incurred throughout the process showcases how the cost of a holdout can far exceed any potential gains. As the regular season approaches, Williams will now have the opportunity to showcase his skills and prove that he can still be a valuable asset to his new team.
