**Alabama A&M Linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. Passes Away Following Game Injury**
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama A&M University is mourning the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr., a 20-year-old linebacker, who succumbed to injuries a month after a football game accident. Burnett Jr., who sustained severe brain injuries during a tackle in the Magic City Classic on October 26, was declared dead at 5:43 p.m. on Wednesday at UAB Hospital, as reported by Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Matt Angelo.
A post by his sister, Dominece, on GoFundMe revealed the extent of Burnett's injuries, explaining that he suffered multiple brain bleeds following a head-on collision. Burnett underwent a craniotomy to alleviate brain swelling, described as a life-saving measure. In a heartfelt plea, Dominece asked for prayers as the family braced for the worst, posting hours before Burnett’s passing, “Please pray he is having a tough time but we are holding on til the very end. God give us strength so we can keep the faith.”
In a turn of events earlier on Wednesday, Alabama A&M erroneously announced Burnett's death but promptly retracted the statement, citing false information. At that time, officials confirmed that Burnett was alive and in stable condition.
Burnett, a redshirt freshman hailing from Lakewood, California, had transferred to Alabama A&M after a season at Grambling State. During his time at Alabama A&M, he recorded three solo tackles and two assists. The exact cause of his death remains undetermined, with further tests pending.
