The San Francisco 49ers' contract negotiations have hit a snag as Pro Bowl tackle Trent Williams remains unsigned, just a week before the start of the 2021 NFL season. While the team was successful in securing wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's new contract, they have yet to come to an agreement with Williams.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed his hopes for progress in talks with Williams on August 21, stating that they were getting close to a resolution. Adding to the optimism, former Washington teammate DeSean Jackson hinted that Williams would soon rejoin the team. However, as September arrives, Williams still appears to be at an impasse with the 49ers.
Williams, known for his unwavering determination, previously sat out an entire season due to dissatisfaction with his former team, Washington. His unwillingness to compromise underscores his firm stance in contractual matters. Currently set to earn $20.05 million this year, Williams is the sixth-highest-paid tackle in the league with an average salary of $23 million.
With three years remaining on his contract, Williams has no remaining guarantees. However, if he is included on the Week 1 active roster, his salary for the 2024 season essentially becomes guaranteed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) rules for vested veterans. If released during the season, he would be entitled to the full amount of his salary as termination pay.
While money is certainly a factor, particularly in regards to the 2024 season, the issue goes beyond guaranteed earnings. The 49ers have failed to present Williams with an offer that meets his expectations. Despite speculations that the team's focus on Aiyuk's contract meant they would now shift their attention to Williams, the front office has the capability to negotiate multiple deals simultaneously.
Without Williams, the 49ers would turn to Jaylon Moore, a fifth-round draft pick, as a replacement. Although Moore may hold his own, he cannot fill the void left by Williams, who possesses exceptional skills and experience. If the 49ers aim to secure their sixth Super Bowl victory, exactly three decades after their last triumph, Williams' presence on the field will be crucial.
Williams understands his value and the significance of his contributions to the team's success. He is prepared to stay away until his demands are met, even if it means sitting out the entire season. The 49ers must recognize his resolve and willingness to take a stand, both for his own welfare and for the betterment of the team.
As negotiations continue, all eyes are on the 49ers' front office to see if they can bridge the gap and bring Williams back into the fold before the start of the highly anticipated 2021 NFL season.
