In a highly anticipated move, cornerback Stephon Gilmore, a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, has found a new home in the NFL. After being a free agent since the start of the new league year, Gilmore and the Minnesota Vikings have reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year pact. The deal is worth up to $10 million, with $7 million guaranteed, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Vikings have been in need of cornerback help heading into the upcoming season, and the addition of Gilmore marks their fifth acquisition in that position group during this offseason. Unfortunately, the team faced setbacks with injuries and tragedy in their cornerback group during training camp. The untimely death of draft pick Khyree Jackson and injuries to other players left the Vikings in a vulnerable spot.
Bringing in Gilmore not only addresses their depth issues but also reunites him with defensive coordinator Brian Flores. The two previously worked together with the New England Patriots, including the 2018 season when Gilmore earned his first All-Pro honor. This familiarity could prove valuable for both Gilmore and the Vikings' defensive strategy.
Many had speculated as to why Gilmore remained a free agent, particularly with preseason games already underway. Despite turning 34 next month and undergoing offseason labrum surgery, Gilmore had a solid 2023 season with the Dallas Cowboys. He recorded 68 tackles, two interceptions, and 13 passes defended in his 12th NFL season.
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell expressed his admiration for Gilmore, stating, "This is a guy that's done it at a really high level for a long time." While the team already has cornerbacks Shaquill Griffin and Byron Murphy Jr. on their roster, the uncertainty surrounding their depth for the 2024 season led to the decision to bring in Gilmore.
The NFC North division poses a significant challenge for the Vikings, with strong passing offenses from the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and the Chicago Bears, who have made notable improvements. The Vikings had curated a young cornerback group, but unfortunate circumstances like the tragic death of Jackson and injuries to other players have left openings in their secondary.
Gilmore aims not only to fill those gaps but also to secure his position as a top cornerback for the Vikings. He will be competing with other veterans who joined the team, such as Fabian Moreau, Duke Shelley, and Jacobi Francis. However, with the significant financial investment made by Minnesota, it is clear that Gilmore is expected to play a crucial role in the team's defense this season.
Having played a vital role for the Dallas Cowboys last season when Trevon Diggs suffered a season-ending injury, Gilmore has shown his ability to step up and perform at a high level. The Vikings will rely on him to do the same as they face a tough schedule in 2024. Gilmore's signing brings renewed hope and excitement to the Vikings and their fans as they prepare for the upcoming season.
