In a surprising turn of events, quarterback Russell Wilson will not make his Steelers game debut in their preseason opener against the Texans. Head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed the decision, stating that Wilson is still working his way back from a calf injury during practice. Instead, it will be rookie Justin Fields who will likely take the field with the first-team offense for a couple of series.
Coach Tomlin emphasized the importance of in-game performance, stating that what happens during the preseason carries more weight than what occurs in practice. This raises the question of whether Fields' performance, with Wilson watching from the sidelines, could serve as an audition for the young quarterback.
When asked about the quarterback competition, Tomlin acknowledged that every opportunity is an audition, not just for Fields, but for others as well. Although Tomlin didn't use his usual "pole position" phrase to describe the gap between Wilson and Fields, the team's released depth chart indicates Wilson as the undisputed number one quarterback.
The depth chart did have one puzzling listing, with rookie Troy Fautanu, who has exclusively played at right tackle, being named the backup left tackle. Tomlin brushed off the confusion, mentioning that he only releases a depth chart due to requirement, downplaying its significance.
Regarding the tackle position, Tomlin expects to see Broderick Jones playing on both sides in the upcoming game. This will allow the team to evaluate both pairings of Jones-Moore and Jones-Fautanu. Left guard Isaac Seumalo will be a healthy scratch, and Tomlin did not reveal who would start in his place, leaving the decision open between Spencer Anderson and Mason McCormick.
A handful of established veterans, including defensive lineman Cam Heyward, outside linebackers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, inside linebacker Patrick Queen, and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, will be held out of the preseason opener to protect them from potential injuries. This presents an opportunity for the Steelers to assess their backups while the starters rest.
As for their opponents, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans intends to play his first-teamers, setting up an intriguing matchup for Fields. Tomlin praised Fields' commitment to improving his footwork, balance, and posture in the pocket during the offseason. The preseason game against the Texans will be the first chance for Fields to demonstrate these adjustments against real pass-rushers.
While rumors swirl around the Steelers engaging in trade talks with the 49ers for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, Coach Tomlin remained tight-lipped about any potential addition to the receiving corps. However, his comments on the current group hinted at the team's desire for more play-making ability.
Tomlin expressed satisfaction with the hard work and consistency shown by the receiving corps, particularly mentioning the performances of Van Jefferson and Scotty Miller, who have made a significant impact during practice.
With Wilson sidelined and Fields stepping into the spotlight, all eyes will be on the young rookie as he aims to impress not only the Steelers but the entire league. As the preseason unfolds, the quarterback competition heats up, and the Steelers search for added firepower in their receiving corps, the excitement for the upcoming season continues to build.
