**Giants' Roster Changes Aim to Boost Offensive Flexibility**
The San Francisco Giants are making significant adjustments to their roster, adding and dropping three players each, which will impact various positions, specifically first base. With these changes, left-handed hitter Smith is set to face right-handed starter Nick Pivetta. Historically, Smith has displayed considerable power against right-handed pitchers, suggesting he will likely be part of a platoon system. Currently, he is the Giants' only experienced left-handed first baseman.
Manager Melvin has several right-handed options to work with as well. Jerar Encarnación, who can play first base, is expected to see more time at designated hitter and right field. Casey Schmitt is another potential candidate for first base. Meanwhile, Wilmer Flores has featured in 60 of the Giants' 61 games this season, and Melvin is keen to provide him with additional rest after Flores played 70 games last year.
Melvin mentioned the benefits of having more options for adjusting the lineup based on players' performance. Johnson, a left-handed player from Vallejo, is taking the starting spot in right field instead of Mike Yastrzemski. Melvin plans to rest Yastrzemski for several games. Additionally, Johnson's experience in center field may offer a chance for Jung Hoo Lee to get some respite, enhancing the team's overall flexibility.
The adjustments come at a crucial time, as the Giants' offense has struggled significantly, losing the first two games of their series against San Diego. By altering the lineup and resting key players, the Giants hope to find a much-needed spark to turn their fortunes around.
