South Korean tech giant Samsung is reportedly working on developing the world's thinnest foldable smartphone, with a sleek design that measures just 7mm when folded. This new model is set to be even thinner than the Galaxy S24, marking an impressive leap in smartphone design and engineering.
Samsung, known for bringing foldable smartphones into the mainstream, has faced criticism that its recent Galaxy Z Fold 6 is merely an incremental upgrade from its predecessors. However, a report from Naver suggests that Samsung is now determined to reclaim the title of the "thinnest foldable phone."
If successful, Samsung's upcoming foldable device will achieve a remarkable slimness of 7mm when folded, making each half approximately 3.5mm thick. This would make it thinner than competitors such as the Honor Magic V3 (9.2mm) and the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 (9.4mm).
Although details about Samsung's plans to achieve this exceptional thinness remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that certain compromises may be necessary. These could potentially include the removal of S Pen functionality and a reduction in battery capacity, among other trade-offs.
Rumors have also circulated about Samsung potentially releasing a Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra and a Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim, but it remains unclear whether these are separate devices or alternative names for the same model. Unfortunately, the release of these new foldables has been indefinitely postponed, leaving many eagerly awaiting more information.
In addition, Samsung is reportedly strategizing to enhance the capabilities of its foldable smartphones by adding exclusive features that distinguish them from traditional smartphones. This move aims to address the perception that foldables offer little over their non-folding counterparts. However, specific details about these exclusive features have not been revealed thus far.
Meanwhile, despite being showcased more than three years ago, there is still no update on the launch of Samsung's much-anticipated tri-fold tablet. Rumors continue to circulate, but a definite release date remains unknown.
As Samsung continues to push boundaries in the world of foldable smartphones, the race to create the thinnest, most functional devices is steadily heating up. While it is uncertain when Samsung's thinner foldable smartphone will be unveiled, technology enthusiasts worldwide eagerly await the day when they can experience the next generation of mobile innovation.
