Saints center Erik McCoy is set to undergo groin surgery and is expected to miss significant playing time, a source disclosed to ESPN on Tuesday. Following a report by the NFL Network, it was revealed that McCoy, who is a team captain and a 2023 Pro Bowl selection, will require surgery and could be sidelined for six to eight weeks. The upcoming surgery marks a considerable setback for the Saints, as they have already faced challenges on the offensive line this season due to injuries.

This recent blow is the second major setback for the Saints' offensive line this season, with All-Pro right tackle Ryan Ramczyk previously being placed on injured reserve before training camp due to knee issues. McCoy's departure during Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, after just three snaps, left a noticeable void in the team's performance. The Saints struggled offensively during the game, experiencing their worst offensive and rushing performance of the season, highlighting the impact of McCoy's absence on the team's gameplay.

Despite the setback, Saints quarterback Derek Carr emphasized the need to adapt to such challenges in football, stating, "You've got to be able to pick right back up and the expectation doesn't change." In McCoy's absence, left guard Lucas Patrick, who joined the team as a free agent this offseason, stepped into McCoy's position during the game against the Eagles. Lucas's performance was acknowledged by coach Dennis Allen, who commended his contribution to the team during a challenging period.

Coach Allen acknowledged the difficulty of losing a player like McCoy, describing it as a challenge that every team in the NFL must face. However, he expressed confidence in the team's ability to overcome such obstacles and praised Patrick for seamlessly transitioning into McCoy's role. Patrick, officially listed as McCoy's backup, has prior experience playing center from his time with the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears, providing reassurance amid McCoy's impending absence.
