**Robert De Niro Stars as Former President in Upcoming Limited Series "Zero Day" for Netflix**
Anticipation for Robert De Niro's limited series "Zero Day" has reached a new high as the first details and images of the series have been released. Originally announced in 2023 with little information to go on, the excitement surrounding the project has only grown over time. De Niro, known for his politically engaged persona, takes on the role of a former U.S. president investigating a significant cyber terrorist attack.
Adding to the star power, Angela Bassett joins the cast as the current U.S. president, while Lizzy Caplan plays De Niro's character's daughter. The series also boasts performances from Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, Connie Britton, Dan Stevens, and Matthew Modine, with notable guest stars including Bill Camp, Gaby Hoffmann, Clark Gregg, and McKinley Belcher III.
"Zero Day" is the brainchild of co-creators Eric Newman ("Narcos"), Noah Oppenheim ("The Thing About Pam," "Jackie"), and Pulitzer Prize winner Michael S. Schmidt. The series is deftly directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, a veteran of acclaimed shows like "Mad Men" and "The Leftovers," who helms all six episodes.
The official synopsis reveals a gripping narrative: respected former U.S. President George Mullen, played by De Niro, is appointed head of the Zero Day Commission to uncover those responsible for a cyber attack that has plunged the nation into chaos and resulted in thousands of lives lost. As misinformation spreads and power dynamics between technology, Wall Street, and government figures intensify, Mullen's relentless pursuit of the truth forces him to unearth his own dark secrets, putting his very essence at risk.
Commenting on the creative process during the 2024 Tribeca Festival Lisboa, De Niro expressed gratitude for having Lesli Linka Glatter as the sole director, citing simplicity and coherence in vision. He likened the experience to making an actual film, which marks a significant departure from typical television series work that often involves multiple directors.
De Niro further reflected on the industry's evolution, noting the abundance of opportunities available today compared to his early years as an actor. He highlighted the substantial commitment required for a limited series, equating it to making three feature films back-to-back, yet satisfying in its immersive storytelling rhythm.
"Zero Day" is set to premiere on Netflix on February 20, 2025, promising to deliver a compelling and politically charged drama with an ensemble cast of celebrated actors.
