Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay announced on Monday that wide receiver Cooper Kupp will be sidelined for "an extended period of time" due to a left ankle sprain. Kupp sustained the injury during the Rams' 41-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
McVay stated that Kupp is being considered for injured reserve, with the team expected to make a decision on Monday or Tuesday. Alongside Kupp, guard Jonah Jackson and safety John Johnson III are also potential candidates for injured reserve due to shoulder injuries.
The Rams' offensive line has already been dealing with multiple injuries, with left guard Steve Avila and tackle Joe Noteboom currently on injured reserve. However, tackle Alaric Jackson will be returning from suspension this week after serving a two-game suspension for a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy.
McVay expressed concern over the instability of the offensive line due to the constant shuffling of players. He stressed the importance of building rapport and chemistry among the linemen, which has been challenging given the number of injuries.
In addition to Kupp, the Rams have also been without wide receiver Puka Nacua, who is on injured reserve following a posterior cruciate ligament sprain in Week 1. With Kupp and Nacua sidelined, the team will rely on wide receivers Demarcus Robinson, Tyler Johnson, Tutu Atwell, and rookie Jordan Whittington.
Kupp had a stellar season in 2021, leading the NFL in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. However, he has battled injury concerns in the past, missing the first four games of last season due to a hamstring injury.
McVay expressed empathy for Kupp and the other injured players, acknowledging their hard work and determination. While he believes the injuries are not season-ending, he emphasized that these will be prolonged absences and every week is valuable.
On a positive note, McVay confirmed that kicker Joshua Karty is expected to play in the next game against the San Francisco 49ers despite dealing with a groin injury.
The Rams will have to adapt and find ways to overcome these injuries as they face upcoming challenges in the season.
