Williams, a standout player from Fresno State and Oregon, caught the attention of scouts with his impressive performance and versatility on the field.
Williams, standing 5-11 and weighing 200 pounds, had a successful college career, earning first- and second-team All-Mountain West Conference honors during his time at Fresno State. Starting in 32 games, he showcased his skills by intercepting four passes and consistently making plays.
However, Williams faced a significant setback during the 2022 season when a knee injury forced him to miss four games. Determined to prove himself in his final college season, Williams transferred to Oregon. This decision paid off, as he was named second-team All-Pac-12 in 13 starts.
The Packers were impressed with Williams' performance and traded up 15 spots in the fourth round to secure him as the No. 111 overall pick. Green Bay's national scout, Sam Seale, had been keeping an eye on Williams since his days at Fresno State. Seale noted that Williams demonstrated a smooth transition when joining Oregon and adapting to their program and system.
Known for his football instincts and intelligence, Williams proved to be a formidable force on the field. At Oregon, he played close to the line of scrimmage, showcasing his ability to blitz effectively. Williams collected an impressive 4½ sacks during his final year, which ranked among the top defensive backs in the FBS.
During pre-draft meetings with the Packers, Williams impressed defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley with his blitzing abilities, aligning well with Hafley's pressure packages. This gave Williams confidence that the Packers had high regard for his skills.
Williams joins fellow safety draft pick Javon Bullard from Georgia, who was selected in the second round. The two standout safeties were voted the best at their positions on their respective teams during the Senior Bowl. Williams has referred to Bullard as "my guy" and praised his physicality, looking forward to being teammates with him in Green Bay.
Describing himself as a player who can "cause havoc" with his tenacity and motor, Williams is ready to contribute to the Packers' defense. While special teams play may be his initial area of impact as a rookie, his versatility in positional alignment and skills make him a valuable addition to the team.
Upon receiving the call from the Packers, Williams was somewhat speechless, as he hadn't expected to be chosen so early in the draft. However, his work ethic, character, and versatility make him a good fit for the Packers' locker room, earning the trust of the team's scouts and coaching staff.
With Williams' arrival, the Packers continue to bolster their defensive roster and eagerly anticipate his contributions on the field.
