In a surprising turn of events, North Carolina State linebacker Payton Wilson was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL Draft despite concerns surrounding his lingering shoulder and knee injuries. Wilson, considered one of the top prospects at his position, slipped in the draft with six linebackers being chosen before him in the first three rounds.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Wilson underwent a subpar operation on his left shoulder, which has resulted in a lingering issue. Additionally, he no longer has an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in one of his knees after suffering two tears in the past. However, former Steelers players Greg Lloyd and Hines Ward have had successful careers despite missing an ACL, possibly giving the Steelers confidence in their decision to select Wilson with the 98th overall pick.

Wilson's performance on the field cannot be overlooked. In 2023, his sixth college season, he won both the Butkus Award for the nation's top linebacker and the Chuck Bednarik Award for the nation's top defensive player. Last season, Wilson made a significant impact with 138 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, three interceptions, and six passes defensed in just 12 games.

During a conference call with Pittsburgh media, Wilson expressed his confidence, stating, "I think I am one of the most productive players in this year's draft. If I am staying healthy... I feel like I [will be] one of the best linebackers in the NFL." His determination to succeed on the field is fueled by his past adversities, understanding that the game can be taken away at any moment.

The main concern surrounding Wilson is his injury history, as he has only played 23 games in his first four seasons due to shoulder and knee issues. However, if he can stay healthy, the Steelers may have found a steal in the draft. Wilson's tenacious style of play, described as having his "hair on fire," has been shaped by his past experiences and serves as a testament to his commitment and perseverance.

As Payton Wilson embarks on his NFL journey with the Pittsburgh Steelers, all eyes will be on his ability to remain healthy and make a significant impact on the field. With his exceptional talent and unwavering determination, Wilson has the potential to become one of the league's top linebackers, proving that resilience and hard work can overcome even the most challenging setbacks.
