Former NFL quarterback Roman Gabriel has sadly passed away at the age of 83, as announced by his son, Roman Gabriel III, on social media. Gabriel, who enjoyed a successful career in football, died peacefully at his home due to natural causes. The family has requested prayers and privacy during this difficult time.

Gabriel's football journey began during his college years, where he excelled as a star player for North Carolina State University from 1959 to 1961. His exceptional skills led to him being selected as the first overall pick in the AFL draft and the second overall pick in the NFL draft in 1962. Ultimately, Gabriel chose to sign with the NFL's Los Angeles Rams over the AFL's Oakland Raiders.

Throughout his career, Gabriel achieved great success and earned numerous accolades. He was named a Pro Bowler for three consecutive years from 1967 to 1969, and in 1969, he was honored as an All-Pro and the league's Most Valuable Player. During his MVP season, Gabriel threw for 2,549 yards, leading the league with 24 touchdowns and just seven interceptions, while guiding the Rams to an 11-3 record.

Despite his achievements, Gabriel never managed to win a playoff game, going 0-2 in the postseason. After spending 11 seasons with the Rams, Gabriel concluded his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, playing for them for five seasons. He had a standout year in 1973, earning another Pro Bowl selection by leading the league in passing attempts, completions, passing yards, and touchdowns.

Gabriel retired from football following the 1977 season and continued to contribute to the sports world in various ways. He pursued acting, coaching, and worked in broadcasting, showcasing his versatility and passion for the game.

With a career that spanned over 16 seasons, Gabriel left an enduring legacy in the NFL. He holds the record for the most touchdown passes in Rams history, with 154, and amassed a total of 29,444 passing yards, 201 touchdowns, and 149 interceptions throughout his career.

The passing of Roman Gabriel marks the end of an era for football enthusiasts, as they remember and pay tribute to a true legend of the sport. His impact on the game will continue to be celebrated and remembered for years to come.
