Roman Gabriel, a football icon and former NFL MVP quarterback, passed away at the age of 83 on Saturday morning, as announced by his son. Gabriel, known as one of the best quarterbacks of his generation, had a remarkable career with the Los Angeles Rams, leaving a lasting impact on the franchise.

In 1962, Gabriel was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the AFL Draft and the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Despite being pursued by the AFL's Raiders, Gabriel chose to join the Rams, a decision that proved to be immensely successful for both him and the team.

Throughout the late 1960s, Gabriel emerged as one of the NFL's premier quarterbacks. He earned Pro Bowl selections every year from 1967 to 1969, and in 1969, he received the honor of being named an All-Pro and the league MVP. That year, Gabriel led the NFL in touchdown passes, highlighting his impressive skills on the field.

Notable for his partnership with the Rams' formidable Fearsome Foursome defensive line, Gabriel played an instrumental role in leading the team to two division titles and a stellar regular season record of 32-7-3 during that period.

Although Gabriel's Rams made it to the playoffs, they were unfortunate in their pursuits for an NFL championship. In 1969, they were defeated by the Green Bay Packers during Vince Lombardi's final title run. Two years later, the Rams suffered a narrow loss to the Minnesota Vikings, who had only experienced one defeat before that year's Super Bowl.

After 11 seasons with the Rams, Gabriel signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1973. In his debut season with the team, Gabriel made an impressive comeback, winning the Comeback Player of the Year award and leading the league in attempts, completions, passing yards, and touchdown passes. He continued to play for four more seasons before retiring after the 1977 season.

Although not inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Gabriel's career accomplishments rival those of many Hall of Fame quarterbacks. He boasts more career passing yards and touchdowns than esteemed quarterbacks such as Bart Starr, Roger Staubach, Bob Griese, and even Terry Bradshaw. Gabriel's career is a testament to his talent and dedication to the game.

In addition to his successful football career, Gabriel excelled in various other fields. He ventured into acting, coaching, and broadcasting, and also made significant contributions to charity organizations, raising millions of dollars for charitable causes.

Gabriel's legacy will forever be engraved in the history of the Los Angeles Rams, holding the all-time record for career touchdown passes with 154. His outstanding achievements on and off the field have solidified his place as a true legend in the sport.

The entire football community mourns the loss of Roman Gabriel and extends heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
