New York City agencies, including the Department of Transportation and the Department of Buildings, have come under scrutiny for leveraging a viral image of Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce yelling at head coach Andy Reid during the Super Bowl to promote their policy objectives. The Department of Transportation drew criticism for linking the image to outdoor dining advocacy, with Councilman Robert Holden of Queens calling for a leadership change within the department. Despite the backlash, DOT spokesman Nick Benson responded humorously, suggesting Kelce was expressing support for outdoor dining initiatives. Additionally, the Department of Buildings also used the image to emphasize the dangers of illegal underground construction. The move sparked controversy and raised questions about the appropriateness of using a sports-related incident to address policy issues. The city agencies have not yet commented on the backlash.
