### How to Submit an Obituary to the Pioneer Press
Placing an obituary in the Pioneer Press requires a few specific steps and the provision of necessary information. To begin the process, all details from the obituary checklist must be sent via email to obits@pioneerpress.com. It’s important to note that submissions cannot be made through the newspaper's website.
For any inquiries, you can reach out to the obituary desk at 651-228-5263. When sending the obituary, ensure that the address, city, state, and zip code of the deceased are included. If you wish to include a photo, JPEG or PDF formats are preferred, though TIF files are also acceptable. The team will contact you if there are any issues with the photo.
There is an opportunity to receive a discount if the obituary runs for more than one day. However, this must be scheduled on the first run date. If a photo is included, it must be published on both days for the discount to apply. Contact the obituary desk for more information regarding this.
To publish an obituary, the name and phone number of the funeral home or cremation society handling the arrangements are mandatory for verification of the death. If the body has been donated to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program or a similar institution, their phone number must be provided for this purpose. It is essential to provide ample time, especially during weekends, to contact the funeral home or program due to their limited hours.
A death certificate can also serve as a means of verification, but only one of these options is necessary. Additionally, the obituary cannot reference other media sources or guestbooks. However, the website for a funeral home or a family email address can be included for contact purposes.
After submission, a proof of the obituary, including the price and scheduled publication dates, will be sent via fax or email for review. It is crucial to carefully review the proof and notify the obituary desk of any errors or changes before the notice appears in the Pioneer Press. The newspaper does not take responsibility for any errors discovered after the final proofing.
All obituaries are also featured on TwinCities.com, where they maintain a permanent online guestbook presence. If you prefer to remove this online guestbook, you can contact the obituary desk to do so. Changes to an online obituary can also be managed by them.
Pre-payment is required for all obituary notices before their publication, following the provided deadline schedule. Payment can be made over the phone using a credit card or check, or in person with cash at the newspaper's front counter from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
The minimum charge for a 10-line obituary is $162. Each additional line costs $12.20. If a photo is published, the charge is $125 per day. For instance, if an obituary with two photos runs for two days, the photo charge would amount to $500. To ensure proper placement on the requested day, it is vital to adhere to the deadline times.
