In a daring rescue operation on Wednesday morning, reptile experts from the Phoenix Herpetological Society successfully wrangled a large monitor lizard from the side of the Loop 101 at Cave Creek Road in Phoenix. The Arizona Department of Public Safety had responded to reports of the unusual sighting around 6:45 a.m.

Authorities identified the animal as a monitor lizard, which is known for its impressive size and agility. Troopers initially attempted to secure the reptile at around 7 a.m., but it managed to evade capture by slipping through a storm drain in the road.

Promptly called to the scene, the knowledgeable team from the Phoenix Herpetological Society engaged in a determined effort to rescue the monitor lizard from the drain. After some time, they successfully retrieved the creature and ensured its safe containment.

Recounting the challenging rescue, Alex Roszkowski from the Herpetological Society stated, "We rescue reptiles every single day, but on the 101, a Nile monitor walking down the 101, that's a first one for me." Roszkowski and his colleague, Casey Brose, not only had to contend with the evasive lizard but also with the intense heat as they rescued the animal.

Brose, emphasizing the urgency of the situation, explained, "At that point, it's 'you gotta go.' Commit or get bit is what we say at the sanctuary." Familiar with Nile monitors due to their presence at the sanctuary, Brose relied on his expertise to safely handle the reptile and swiftly transfer it to a vehicle where it could cool down.

The Phoenix Herpetological Society is currently working to identify the owner of the monitor lizard. Arizona's Family is in contact with the society, and any additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

This thrilling rescue serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of the reptile experts who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of these unique creatures.
