In an exciting update for fans of the King of Pop, the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, titled "Michael," has made some major casting announcements and shared new details about its production. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film aims to provide a riveting and honest portrayal of the legendary artist's life and career.
Leading the cast is Larenz Tate, known for his role in the popular "Power" franchise, who will be portraying the iconic Motown Records founder Berry Gordy. Gordy played a pivotal role in shaping American music by launching acts such as the Jackson 5, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, and many more. Tate's connection to Jackson's legacy is notable, as he previously portrayed "Thriller" producer Quincy Jones in the 2004 film "Ray."
Joining Tate is Kat Graham, who will be playing the legendary Diana Ross. As the lead singer of Diana Ross & the Supremes, Ross played a significant role in introducing the Jackson 5 to the world. Her influence on Michael Jackson lasted throughout his career, making Graham's casting an exciting addition to the film.
The cast also includes Jessica Sula as La Toya Jackson, Michael's older sister; Liv Symone as Gladys Knight; Kevin Shinick as Dick Clark; KeiLyn Durrel Jones as Jackson's former security-turned-trusted friend Bill Bray; and Kendrick Sampson as industry icon Quincy Jones. Sampson's portrayal of Jones is particularly noteworthy, as he collaborated with Jackson on three of his most successful albums: "Off the Wall," "Thriller," and "Bad."
In addition to the cast, the biopic has enlisted the participation of other notable figures. Jaafar Jackson, Michael's nephew, will be making his screen debut by playing his uncle in the film. Juliano Krue Valdi, a 9-year-old actor, will portray the young Michael during his early days with the Jackson 5. Colman Domingo and Nia Long will take on the roles of Joe and Katherine Jackson, the heads of the Jackson family. Miles Teller is set to play Jackson's attorney and advisor John Branca.
The film, produced by Graham King of GK Films, is set to hit theaters on April 18, 2025. Written by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan, "Michael" promises to offer audiences an inside look into the life of one of the most influential artists the world has ever known. It will delve into Jackson's triumphs and tragedies, exploring his human side as well as his public and private struggles. The film will also recreate some of Jackson's most memorable performances, showcasing his undeniable creative genius.
The news release also acknowledged the accusations of child sexual abuse that have been leveled against Jackson. The filmmakers plan to address these allegations, considering the 24/7 media scrutiny Jackson faced even at the height of his career. Jackson maintained his innocence and was acquitted in a criminal trial in 2005. His family and estate have continued to defend him following his death in 2009.
With an ensemble cast of gifted actors and a talented filmmaking team, "Michael" aims to provide an unforgettable cinematic experience that pays tribute to the legacy of the King of Pop. As the biopic continues its production, fans can anticipate an in-depth exploration of Michael Jackson's life and lasting impact on the music industry.
