The New York Mets have announced that right-hander Kodai Senga has been transferred to the 60-day injured list, making way for left-hander Tyler Jay to join the club. Senga, 31, was diagnosed with a moderate posterior capsule strain in his throwing shoulder during Spring Training and initially started the season on the 15-day IL.
Mets' manager Carlos Mendoza revealed that Senga has yet to throw off a mound, indicating a slower recovery process. The team had hoped for a three-week shutdown period initially, but decided to add an additional seven to ten days for cautionary measures. However, due to the lack of progress, it appears that Senga may not be ready to rejoin the team for at least another six weeks.
Senga, who had an impressive debut season with the Mets after coming over from Japan, threw 166 1/3 innings with a stellar 2.98 earned run average. He captured attention by finishing seventh in National Cy Young voting and second in Rookie of the Year voting. With his absence, the Mets will undoubtedly feel the impact of losing a key pitcher from their rotation.
The Mets have faced numerous injuries to their rotation this year, with David Peterson undergoing hip surgery in the offseason and beginning the year on the IL. Both Senga and Max Kranick also joined the injured list due to spring injuries, with Kranick suffering from a hamstring strain. Furthermore, Tylor Megill secured a rotation spot but landed on the IL after just one outing due to a shoulder strain.
The news of Senga's transfer to the 60-day injured list comes as a frustrating setback for both the player and the team. Mets' fans will have to patiently wait for Senga's recovery and hope that he can return to his impressive form upon his return.
The Mets will now rely on left-hander Tyler Jay to fill the void left by Senga's absence.
