In a move aimed at strengthening their lineup and bolstering offensive production, the Seattle Mariners have acquired veteran infielder/designated hitter Justin Turner from the Toronto Blue Jays. The trade was confirmed by Mariners general manager Justin Hollander just before the team took the field at Fenway Park on Monday afternoon.
Justin Turner, 39, brings a wealth of postseason experience and a proven track record at the plate. With 299 plate appearances for Toronto this season, he has posted a .254/.349/.371 slash line, hitting 17 doubles, six home runs, and 31 RBI. The Mariners front office is optimistic about Turner's ability to contribute both on the field and in the clubhouse.
Manager Scott Servais expressed his excitement at the acquisition, highlighting Turner's reputation as a seasoned professional known for his leadership qualities. With the Mariners aiming for a strong finish to the season, Turner's experience and winning mentality are seen as valuable additions to the team.
Turner's performance has been particularly impressive since July 1, with a .301/.401/.399 slash line that includes seven doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBI. While primarily serving as a designated hitter, Turner has also filled in at first base and third base throughout the season.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays were in the middle of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards when the trade was finalized. Turner was promptly removed from the game and informed of the trade. He had a successful at-bat, going 1-for-1 before leaving the field.
As part of the trade, the Mariners have sent minor league outfield prospect R.J. Schreck to the Blue Jays. Schreck, ranked as the Mariners' No. 29 prospect, was recently promoted to Double-A Arkansas after an impressive showing in High-A Everett. In 78 games, he posted a .261/.401/.464 slash line with 20 doubles, 12 home runs, and 44 RBI.
The Mariners are hopeful that the addition of Justin Turner will provide the offensive boost they need to make a push for the playoffs. As the MLB trade deadline approaches, Seattle continues to make moves in their bid for a successful season.
