In a recent interview with The Independent, Luke Grimes, co-star of the hit series "Yellowstone," shared his thoughts on Kevin Costner's decision to leave the show ahead of its final episodes. Grimes, who portrays Kayce Dutton, the youngest son of Costner's character John Dutton III, expressed his disappointment over the situation.
Grimes alluded to speculation of a feud between Costner and the production, stating, "Whatever happened there is unfortunate if it's changed anything about how the show will unfold." However, he acknowledged Costner's passion projects as the likely reason behind his departure. "I know [Costner] got busy with his movies that were like passion projects," Grimes explained. "At a certain point, you gotta do what you gotta do, man; you gotta do what you love."
In May 2023, it was confirmed that "Yellowstone" would be ending after its fifth season, leaving fans wondering about Costner's involvement. Prior rumors suggested that Costner might not return for the second half of season five. These rumors gained traction as shooting for new episodes was delayed due to the Hollywood writers' strike.
Costner shed light on the controversy during a court battle with his ex-wife, Christine Baumgartner, over the summer. He expressed frustration over the additional production time required for "Yellowstone" while he was working on his latest passion project, "Horizon: An American Saga." Costner recently revealed on Instagram that "Horizon" will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Regarding his character's return for the final season of "Yellowstone," Costner mentioned his willingness but stated that the logistics were still being worked out. He expressed his love for the series and his initial anticipation of seven seasons. Costner also shared that he has imagined how his character's story will end, but ultimately, it is up to the show's creator, Taylor Sheridan.
Luke Grimes, reflecting on his time on the show, expressed his gratitude for being part of the "Yellowstone" family for seven years. He called the experience intense yet rewarding, acknowledging the significant impact it had on his life. He also revealed his eagerness to see how the story concludes, signaling his readiness to tell the end of the saga.
Costner's country western epic, "Horizon," is set to debut in theaters on Friday, June 28, with the second part releasing 49 days later on Friday, August 16. As for "Yellowstone," fans can expect the final episodes to air in November, bringing the beloved Western drama to a close.
