In a now-viral video from the Cannes Film Festival, singer Kelly Rowland was caught in a tense exchange with an usher at the premiere of Marcello Mio on Tuesday evening. The incident took place on the red carpet as Rowland was making her way into the Palais des Festivals.
The footage, which quickly circulated on social media, shows Rowland graciously posing for photos and acknowledging her fans. As she approached the steps leading up to the venue, an usher directed her to move quickly, cutting short her time in front of the cameras. The situation escalated when a group of ushers signaled Rowland to walk on the right side. In the commotion, one usher, dressed in a black suit, appeared to rush Rowland and accidentally stepped on her gown.
Initially, Rowland remained calm, assuring the usher not to worry and smiling. However, the usher continued to touch the singer's arm persistently, saying something that appeared to upset Rowland. In response, Rowland reprimanded the usher, but her pleas fell on deaf ears.
Fortunately, a man intervened and began addressing the usher, allowing Rowland to continue her ascent up the staircase. Meanwhile, a woman accompanying Rowland confronted the usher, questioning her actions. The situation escalated further when the usher touched the woman, seemingly pushing the group toward the theater's entrance.
A lip reading expert, consulted by Page Six, revealed that Rowland spoke sternly to the usher during their exchange, stating, "Don't talk to me like that. You're not my mother. I told you not to talk to me like that."
The incident highlights the strict security measures implemented at the Cannes Film Festival. Red carpet attendees are often rushed into the theaters to ensure punctuality for screenings and maintain the festival's schedule. In 2018, Cannes even prohibited selfies on the red carpet to prevent delays, prompting security to snatch phones or cover camera lenses if rules were broken.
