In an exciting development for the New York Jets, wide receiver Mike Williams has been given the green light to play in their Week 1 matchup. Williams had been recovering from knee surgery after tearing his ACL last September while playing for the Los Angeles Chargers. He started training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list but has made a strong comeback, participating in 11-on-11 drills this week.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh spoke about Williams' return, acknowledging that while he will be available in Week 1, it would be unrealistic to expect him to be at his pre-injury form right away. Saleh emphasized that the team will be cautious with Williams and carefully manage his workload. Despite this, Saleh expressed confidence that Williams can still make a significant impact on the field.
During a recent closed scrimmage-like practice, Williams showcased his skills by catching four or five passes for over 100 yards, according to Saleh. Williams himself expressed satisfaction with his progress, stating that his hard work throughout his recovery is paying off at the right time.
When asked about his potential role in Week 1, Williams remained open and ready for any task assigned to him. In training camp, the primary wide receivers have been Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard. It is possible that the Jets could utilize Wilson, Lazard, and Williams in their three-receiver set, with Wilson taking on the slot position.
Excitement is building within the team about the offensive potential with Williams joining the lineup. Williams praised quarterback Aaron Rodgers, noting that both of them are performing at a high level, along with the other players making plays against their challenging defense.
Despite only having two full practices under his belt, Williams expressed full confidence in his surgically repaired knee. The Jets will face the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium on Monday Night Football for their season opener.
It is worth noting that the Jets took a chance on Williams, signing him to a one-year, $10 million contract after his release from the Chargers. With an impressive average of 15.9 yards per reception over the past five seasons, Williams ranks first among the 81 players with at least 300 targets in the NFL.
The return of Mike Williams brings a boost of excitement, as the Jets look forward to fielding a strong and talented offense in their highly anticipated season opener.
