In a surprising turn of events, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers and edge rusher Haason Reddick were notable absences at the team's mandatory minicamp, which kicked off on Tuesday. Coach Robert Saleh confirmed in a news conference that while Rodgers' absence was not excused, it was expected as he had previously informed the team of his non-attendance. Saleh mentioned that Rodgers was attending an important personal event.
Despite the unexcused absence, Saleh expressed that he was not disappointed with Rodgers' decision. The veteran quarterback had actively participated in the team's organized team activities sessions leading up to minicamp. Rodgers, who is recovering from a season-ending Achilles tendon injury last year, is focused on his journey back to the game.
Regarding Reddick's absence, Saleh stated that he was unsure if it was due to his contract situation. However, he had confidence in Reddick's professionalism and readiness to play. The Jets acquired Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason, and he has one year left on his contract with a salary of $14.25 million in 2024. Reddick, who has recorded four consecutive 10-sack seasons, is reportedly seeking a new deal for long-term security.
By skipping both voluntary workouts and mandatory minicamp, Reddick forfeited a $250,000 roster bonus and will face an additional $50,000 fine. It is uncertain whether he will also skip training camp, which could potentially create further distractions for the Jets.
While Rodgers' absence may not significantly impact the team due to his strong chemistry with his teammates throughout the offseason, questions arise regarding the potential disparity in treatment if other players had chosen to skip practice. Nonetheless, the Jets were initially under the impression that Reddick would participate in the offseason program, making his absence an unexpected disruption.
The Jets' main focus now will be resolving the ongoing contract situation with Reddick, as the team had initially planned to play out his current contract. As for Rodgers, he remains committed to rehabilitating his injury and preparing for the upcoming season.
