In a recent interview on the Back to the Best podcast, Patricia Richardson, known for her role as Jill Taylor in the hit TV show Home Improvement, shed light on her divergent pay compared to her co-star Tim Allen and addressed the possibility of a revival of the beloved series.
Richardson revealed that during negotiations for a potential ninth season, she was offered $1 million per episode, which was only half of what Allen was offered. However, she explained that she didn't want to continue doing more episodes at that time as she had just gone through a divorce and wanted to spend more time with her family.
In an attempt to negotiate better terms, Richardson requested to be paid the same as Allen and also requested an executive producer credit for the season. She admitted that she knew Disney would never agree to her demands, describing it as a way to say "no" and expressing her frustration with the significant pay disparity between herself and Allen.
Despite the success of Home Improvement, Richardson highlighted that she had never been paid even a third of what Allen was earning, despite putting in equal effort. She believed that she played a significant role in the show's popularity, stating, "I was a big reason why women were watching."
Regarding the possibility of a Home Improvement revival, Richardson clarified that she and co-star Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who played Randy Taylor, had not been approached by Allen about the idea. She expressed her surprise and disappointment that Allen had been publicly suggesting that everyone was on board for a reunion without consulting the cast.
Although there won't be any new episodes of Home Improvement in the foreseeable future, fans of the show can still enjoy the original eight seasons streaming on Disney+. As for Richardson, she continues to focus on her personal life and is grateful for her time on the iconic sitcom that brought her and Allen to prominence.
While a revival may not be on the horizon, the enduring popularity of Home Improvement serves as a testament to its impact on television and the fond memories it continues to evoke among its dedicated fanbase.
