Gunmen riding jet skis targeted a rival drug dealer on a beach in Cancun, Mexico, resulting in the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy. According to Mexican authorities, the young victim sustained fatal gunshot wounds and passed away after being taken to a hospital. The incident occurred while the boy was relaxing on a lounge chair with his family on the beach.
Authorities revealed that the intended targets of the gunmen were rival drug dealers embroiled in a conflict over drug sales, with the boy being struck by stray bullets during the attack. Territorial disputes among drug traffickers have previously led to the deaths of tourists in various resorts along Mexico's Caribbean coast.
The killing in Cancun is reminiscent of previous violent incidents in the region. In 2022, two Canadians were murdered in Playa del Carmen due to disputes over debts involving international drug and weapons trafficking groups. Additionally, in 2021 in Tulum, a California travel blogger of Indian descent and a German national lost their lives in a crossfire between rival drug dealers.
