In a joint statement, the G7 countries expressed their deep concern over reports of Iran considering the transfer of ballistic missiles and related technology to Russia. The statement, issued by the G7, warned of swift and coordinated action against Iran if it proceeds with providing this military support to Russia's war effort against Ukraine.

The G7 emphasized their extreme concern over Iran's potential move to transfer ballistic missiles after already supplying the Russian regime with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which have been used in relentless attacks against civilians in Ukraine. Should Iran go ahead with the transfer, the international community stands ready to respond with new and substantial measures against Iran.

The United States and its allies have unequivocally asserted their unified stance on this matter, making it clear that for Iran, the costs of such actions will outweigh any potential benefits. A senior Biden administration official emphasized that this situation is far from business as usual.

One potential measure discussed as a response is the termination of flights from the state-owned airline, Iran Air, into Europe. However, it remains unclear whether Iranian leadership itself utilizes the airline or if it is solely used by Iranian citizens.

The mounting concern about Iran's military support for Russia comes at a time when Russia has gained momentum on the battlefield, forcing Ukraine to restrict its ammunition supply. CIA Director Bill Burns has warned that without additional assistance, Ukraine is likely to lose significant ground in 2024, alluding to the risk of further annexations by Russia.

Citing a recent Reuters article, the senior administration official pointed towards Iran's attempt to advance negotiations with Russia, as it has reportedly provided ballistic missiles already. Russia has deployed multiple ballistic missile systems to a training area in Iran, while also collaborating with Iran to build a drone-manufacturing facility, as confirmed by CNN reports. Despite not having confirmation of the transfer of missiles from Iran to Russia, the US and its allies believe negotiations are actively progressing.

Iran has already supplied Russia with a substantial number of drones, guided aerial bombs, and artillery ammunition, which have been devastatingly employed in attacks against Ukraine. The potential transfer of ballistic missiles would constitute a further escalation in Iran's assistance to Russia on the battlefield.

The G7's strong message serves as a warning to Iran, highlighting the grave consequences it may face should it proceed with the transfer of ballistic missiles and related technology to Russia. The international community is united in its determination to address this threat and uphold the stability and security of the region.
