In a recent phone call, Russian President Vladimir Putin informed US President Donald Trump that he felt compelled to respond to Ukraine's weekend drone attack, Trump disclosed. This exchange marks their second conversation in a matter of weeks, as Trump endeavors to broker an end to the ongoing conflict. Announcing the details of the 75-minute call via Truth Social, Trump seemed to acknowledge that an immediate resolution to the war remained out of reach.

Trump mentioned their discussion touched on recent actions by both sides, including Ukraine's strike on Russian airfields. Despite affirming the conversation was productive, Trump indicated it did not signal an imminent peace. "President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields," he stated.

This interaction did little to suggest progress in Trump's efforts to mediate the conflict. While he previously claimed that within two weeks he could gauge Putin's seriousness about a ceasefire, he has not elaborated on his methodology for this determination. Furthermore, Trump has faced mounting pressure to impose additional sanctions on Russia, a step he has yet to take.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Russian and Ukrainian officials met in Istanbul for direct talks, but these discussions ended without any shifts in stance from either side. Trump has taken credit for facilitating these face-to-face meetings. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov relayed that Putin briefed Trump on the Istanbul negotiations, accusing Ukraine of attempting to disrupt them by targeting civilian areas.

On the same day as the call between Putin and Trump, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine's presidential office, in Washington to deliberate on the US approach amid the ongoing war. Rubio was reportedly set to commend Ukraine's flexibility and aspirations for a ceasefire but also to clarify that a return to the previous US policy of unlimited military support is not anticipated.

New footage from Ukraine's security agency, SBU, showcased the precision of the drone strikes, revealing extensive damage to Russian military aircraft. Ukrainian military officials claimed 41 Russian planes were either hit or destroyed.

In addition to the Ukraine conflict, Trump and Putin discussed Iran's nuclear ambitions. Trump underscored the urgency for Iran to decide promptly regarding its nuclear weapon program, emphasizing agreement with Putin on preventing Iran from obtaining such weapons. Putin suggested he might join discussions to expedite a resolution on the Iranian issue.

This phone call underscores the multifaceted challenges and diplomatic efforts currently at play in the international arena, with Trump navigating complex negotiations involving Ukraine and Iran simultaneously.
