Francis Ford Coppola's highly anticipated and self-funded feature film, Megalopolis, is set to make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17. The film, which Coppola began writing in 1983, comes with a hefty price tag of $120 million, partly financed through the sale of a significant portion of his wine empire.
Recently, the film had a screening for potential buyers, where industry heavyweights such as Universal's Donna Langley, Netflix's Ted Sarandos, and Sony's Tom Rothman were in attendance at Universal CityWalk. While distribution is still being sought, Coppola has expressed his desire for an Imax release.
Feedback from those who attended the screening varied. One studio head described the film as "not good" and expressed concern about potential financial losses, while another attendee stated that they "enjoyed it enormously."
Coppola, known for his critically acclaimed film Apocalypse Now, is hopeful that Megalopolis will pave its own path to acclaim, following in the footsteps of his previous Cannes success.
Megalopolis joins the lineup of already-announced films at Cannes, including Kevin Costner's Horizon, another self-funded epic, and George Miller's Mad Max title Furiosa. The full Cannes lineup will be announced on April 11, adding to the anticipation surrounding the prestigious film festival.
As the release date approaches, excitement builds for Coppola's long-awaited Megalopolis, while industry insiders eagerly await news of its distribution and its potential reception on the big screen.
