In a move aimed at strengthening Ukraine's diplomatic ties with the United Kingdom, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the country's former military chief, as the new ambassador to Britain. Zelenskyy, who sacked Zaluzhnyi as head of the armed forces last month, announced his approval of this crucial diplomatic appointment.

This decision comes at a crucial time as Britain has been a key supporter of Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia. As tensions escalated between the two neighboring countries, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of having individuals who are "convinced of victory" against Russia lead Ukraine. Zaluzhnyi, who is widely respected among Ukrainian troops and considered a national hero, played a critical role in stalling Russia's full-scale invasion during the early days of the war and skillfully pushing back Moscow's troops.

However, reported tensions between Zaluzhnyi and the president grew as Ukraine's much-anticipated 2023 counteroffensive failed to make significant territorial gains. Against this backdrop, Zelenskyy expressed on Thursday via Telegram that Zaluzhnyi expressed his desire to pursue a career in diplomacy.

Zelenskyy sees this appointment as an opportunity to strengthen Ukraine's alliance with Britain amid the ongoing conflict. The position of ambassador to Britain had been vacant since July when the previous envoy, Vadym Prystaiko, was removed by the president. The reasons for Prystaiko's removal were not disclosed, but public criticisms directed towards Zelenskyy were known.

Britain's unwavering support for Ukraine in the war, which is currently in its third year, has been significant. The British government announced on Thursday that it would provide 10,000 attack drones to Ukraine, indicating its commitment to aiding Ukraine's defense capabilities. This move includes an investment of 125 million pounds ($160 million) in addition to the previously committed 200 million pounds ($256 million) for drones.

With this appointment and the continued support from the UK, Ukraine hopes to further strengthen its diplomatic efforts and military partnership in the ongoing conflict with Russia. It remains to be seen how Zaluzhnyi's expertise and experience will contribute to advancing Ukraine's interests on the diplomatic front.
