The Florida State Seminoles' preseason camp has come to a close, and the defensive side of the ball is looking strong. With a variety of skilled players, the Seminoles' defense is shaping up to be a formidable force this season.
Leading the charge on the defensive line is redshirt junior Patrick Payton, along with transfers Marvin Jones Jr. and Sione Lolohea. This trio brings a combination of pass-rushing ability and effectiveness against the run, making them a strength for the Seminoles. Payton has shown remarkable development and maturity, standing out as a consistent practice player and leader.
Jones Jr., a highly anticipated addition to the team, had a slow start to camp but quickly caught up, showing off his explosive first step and length on a 6-foot-5 frame. Lolohea, weighing in at 265 pounds on a 6-foot-3 frame, provides a different dynamic as an edge setter and capable pass rusher.
The defensive line rotation is expected to involve four to five players, including redshirt junior Byron Turner Jr. and redshirt sophomore Aaron Hester. Turner Jr. had an impressive camp, displaying his maturity and consistency. Hester, on the other hand, has been a pleasant surprise, showcasing his physicality and aggressive playing style.
While redshirt sophomore Dante Anderson and freshman DD Holmes may not see much playing time this season, their development and progress have been notable. Anderson has bulked up and is next in line for the deep rotation, while Holmes, with his 6-foot-6 frame and athleticism, shows great potential for the future.
In the middle, redshirt juniors Joshua Farmer and Darrell Jackson Jr. form a formidable duo, weighing a combined 650 pounds. Farmer is the more consistent player, while Jackson Jr. brings overpowering strength. As a pair, they can create favorable matchups for the Seminoles, taking on multiple offensive linemen.
Behind them, redshirt junior Grady Kelly and redshirt sophomore Daniel Lyons provide depth. Kelly, a transfer from Colorado State, brings good hand technique and mobility, though he can struggle against powerful guards. Lyons, with his long arms and athleticism, has the potential to create pocket pressure when he wins the physical battles.
The Seminoles have also welcomed freshman defensive tackles D'Nas White and Jamorie Flagg, who are learning under the guidance of coach Odell Haggins. These big-bodied linemen have the opportunity to contribute and develop in their first year.
Moving on to the linebacker position, concerns about depth were alleviated during the preseason. Redshirt senior DJ Lundy is set to replace Kalen DeLoach and Tatum Bethune, and his camp performance has been positive. The coaching staff has focused on giving Lundy reps while also developing the young linebackers around him.
A standout addition to the linebacker group is senior Cam Riley, who quickly adapted to the team's defensive scheme. Standing at 6-foot-5 and 237 pounds, Riley brings exceptional athleticism and football intelligence. His role is expected to be prominent, either as a starter alongside Lundy or in a specialized package.
Sophomores Justin Cryer and Blake Nichelson have also shown growth and development. Cryer's competitiveness and athletic improvements make him an asset, while Nichelson's athleticism and physicality have improved since last year.
Redshirt sophomore Omar Graham Jr. has received praise from the coaching staff, being healthy and consistent throughout camp.
In the secondary, the Seminoles boast a strong group of cornerbacks. Azareye'h Thomas and Fentrell Cypress II are expected to excel in one-on-one matchups on the outside. Thomas, standing 6-foot-2, impresses with his athleticism and ball skills, while Cypress II has improved his comfort and confidence in the defensive scheme.
The depth at cornerback is also impressive, with players like Quindarrius Jones, Edwin Joseph, Ja'Bril Rawls, and Christian White stepping up and making plays. Newcomers Cai Bates, Charles Lester III, and Ricky Knight III have also shown promise, likely earning them spot duty throughout the season.
Overall, Florida State's defense has shown great depth and talent during the preseason camp. With a mix of experienced players and promising newcomers, the Seminoles are poised to have a strong defensive presence on the field this season.
