In a concerning development, Vietnam has recorded its first case of avian flu A/H9, with a 37-year-old man in Tien Giang Province testing positive for the infectious virus. The man, residing in Chau Thanh District, initially experienced fever symptoms and self-medicated on March 10. As his condition worsened, he was admitted to the HCMC Hospital for Tropical Diseases on March 16, where doctors diagnosed him with severe viral pneumonia.

Following tests, it was confirmed that the individual had influenza A, with genetic segments resembling the A/H9 influenza strain. The Pasteur Institute of HCMC also affirmed the results. Presently, the man remains under intensive care at the hospital, receiving necessary treatment.

Public health officials have reassured the public that there is currently no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the A/H9 influenza strain. The Ministry of Health stated that this is the first documented case of A/H9 in Vietnam, adding that between 2015 and 2023, a total of 98 cases have been recorded in the West Pacific region, resulting in two fatalities.

It is important to note that avian flu, including the A/H9 strain, does not yet have a known cure or vaccine. The mortality rate for avian flu can be as high as 50%, while the mortality rate for regular flu typically ranges between 1-4%.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and conducting necessary measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Vigilant surveillance, strict biosecurity protocols, and public awareness campaigns will be critical in controlling the transmission of avian flu in the region.

Health officials strongly advise the public to practice good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding contact with sick birds or their droppings. Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms should seek medical attention promptly to receive appropriate care.

As the first case of avian flu A/H9 is reported in Vietnam, health authorities are working diligently to mitigate the spread of the virus and protect public health. Strict vigilance and adherence to preventive measures are vital to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
