In a surprising turn of events during the 2024 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons made a bold move to secure a second top-10 selection. The Falcons, who already held the No. 8 pick, reached out to the New York Jets to inquire about a trade for the No. 10 pick, as revealed in behind-the-scenes footage from the Jets' draft room.

According to Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot, the team had specific players in mind that they wanted to acquire in the first round. The Falcons' initial selection of Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 had drawn criticism for not addressing the team's immediate roster needs.

The Jets' video footage shows the moment when the Falcons expressed their interest in trading up. Jets general manager Joe Douglas informs his staff that the Tennessee Titans, holding the No. 7 pick, are expected to select offensive tackle JT Latham. At 8:55 p.m. ET, the Jets learn that Atlanta wants to trade for the No. 10 pick, offering their No. 8 pick as part of the deal.

Although the trade did not materialize, the Falcons proceeded with their selection of Penix Jr. at No. 10, while the Chicago Bears drafted receiver Rome Odunze at No. 9. The Minnesota Vikings used the pick they acquired from the Jets to select quarterback J.J. McCarthy at No. 10. The Jets, now holding the No. 11 pick, chose Penn State offensive lineman Olu Fashanu.

While the Falcons missed out on reentering the first round, they later traded up in the second round with the Arizona Cardinals. This allowed them to select Clemson defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro.

In a statement following the draft, Fontenot mentioned the possibility of targeting a cornerback in the first round, but the first defensive back was not selected until the 22nd pick, when the Philadelphia Eagles picked Quinyon Mitchell. The Indianapolis Colts were the first team to choose a defensive player, selecting pass rusher Laiatu Latu at No. 15.

The Falcons' aggressive approach in attempting to secure the No. 10 pick showcased their determination to make impactful moves in the draft. While their efforts ultimately fell through, Atlanta managed to add key players to their roster and address their defensive needs in later rounds.
