In a bid to find a solution for struggling pitcher Bobby Miller, the Los Angeles Dodgers have decided to option the right-hander to the minors following his disastrous performance against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. Miller, who recently returned from the injured list, endured the worst start of his career, allowing nine runs in just four innings.
Since his return, Miller has struggled to find his form, surrendering a staggering 19 runs in 17⅓ innings across four starts. His lack of execution and struggles to get ahead of batters have been evident, raising concerns about his ability to perform at the major league level.
Following Tuesday's game, Miller acknowledged his need to improve his execution and be more aggressive in attacking opposing batters. He emphasized the importance of getting ahead in the count and quickly putting hitters away, rather than letting at-bats drag on.
The Dodgers' decision to option Miller to the minors does not come as a surprise. While the team did not specify the destination, the move aims to allow Miller to work on his skills and regain his confidence. It also means that Miller will not be eligible to return to the majors until at least July 25, unless there is an injury requiring his recall.
Manager Dave Roberts stated that there is no definitive timeline for Miller's minor-league demotion. The plan is for him to work closely with minor league pitching director Rob Hill before joining the Oklahoma City rotation after the All-Star break. Roberts described this as an opportunity for Miller to reset and find his rhythm.
With Miller being sent down, the Dodgers currently have only four starting pitchers on their active roster. To fill the gap, the team has called up Ricky Vanasco from Oklahoma City. Vanasco will step into Miller's spot in the rotation and help navigate the upcoming games.
Additionally, Tyler Glasnow, who faced a similar fate with his recent placement on the injured list, will also be unavailable until after the All-Star break. However, there is a possibility of Glasnow returning as early as July 21, while Clayton Kershaw continues his rehab and is set for at least one more minor league start before considering a comeback.
As the Dodgers face a rotation conundrum, they hope that young arms such as Gavin Stone, Landon Knack, and Justin Wrobleski, alongside veteran James Paxton, can rise to the challenge. The team is in dire need of pitching stability after enduring a rough stretch that has seen the rotation give up 45 runs in the last 10 games.
In the coming weeks, it will be crucial for the Dodgers' replacements to step up and provide consistency on the mound, as the team looks to solidify its position atop the standings. Meanwhile, Bobby Miller will have the opportunity to reset and rebuild his confidence in the minors, with hopes of making a strong return to the majors in the near future.
