### Diontae Johnson Ruled Out for Sunday's Game Against Denver

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who anticipated playing in Sunday's game at Denver, has been ruled out by the Carolina Panthers due to a rib injury. This decision comes just one day after Johnson expressed confidence in his ability to play. Head coach Dave Canales suggested that this decision was influenced by general manager Dan Morgan and Brandt Tilis, the executive vice president of football operations.

Johnson, who also dealt with an ankle injury last week, participated in the Panthers’ 40-7 defeat against the Washington Commanders. Acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers during the offseason, Johnson is in the final year of his contract. "I want to do the best thing for Diontae, the best thing for the offense and continuity of what we're trying to get done," said Canales following Friday's practice. He further indicated assurance in the capability of other players stepping in due to Johnson's unavailability.

Adding to their challenges, the Panthers (1-6) will also be without wide receiver Adam Thielen, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Thielen was designated for return from injury earlier this week but will not participate in Sunday's game.

In another setback, quarterback Andy Dalton, who suffered a sprained thumb in a car accident on Tuesday, is considered a "longshot" to back up rookie Bryce Young. Initially, the hope was that Dalton could be available if needed. As a result, undrafted rookie Jack Plummer is expected to back up Young, who has not started since being benched after an 0-2 start.

Johnson leads the team's receiving stats with 30 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Thielen, who led the team in catches last season, has only played three games this year due to his hamstring injury. With both Johnson and Thielen out, Young will rely on rookie Xavier Legette (18 catches, 177 yards), Jonathan Mingo (12 catches, 121 yards), Jalen Coker (8 catches, 108 yards), and David Moore (5 catches, 44 yards) as his primary targets.

"The guys he's going to be playing with on Sunday practiced with him and did a great job," Canales stated. "It was a really good week of practice in terms of the throwing, catching, and rhythm."

In some positive news for the Panthers, outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, who missed the past two games with a shoulder injury, is set to play on Sunday.
