Cities Opt for Drones Over Fireworks to Address Environmental Concerns

Several cities across the United States have made a unique change in their Fourth of July celebrations, replacing traditional fireworks displays with spectacular light shows using drones. Citing environmental and health concerns, cities like Napa, California, and Salt Lake City, Utah, have decided to forgo fireworks this year and instead create a tribute to America using synchronized drones.
The use of drones in light shows has been gaining popularity in recent years due to their ability to create stunning visuals in the night sky, often accompanied by synchronized music. Researchers at Curtin University in Australia have found several advantages to using drones over fireworks. Professor Bill Bateman, who conducted the study, discovered that fireworks can have highly damaging effects, particularly on animals.
Contrary to the belief that animals might perceive fireworks as thunderstorms, the research found that large bursts of erratic noise from fireworks can be extremely disturbing to animals. Reports from veterinary associations worldwide indicate that domestic and farm animals often panic and run, with horses sometimes even driving themselves into fences in an attempt to escape the noise.
In addition to the distress caused to animals, fireworks also contribute to air pollution. Bateman explains that firework displays can immediately impact people's breathing, and the air quality can remain low for several days afterward. This concern prompted Tahoe City, California, to switch to drone shows three years ago, as they offer a more sustainable option without polluting the air.
The decision to replace fireworks with drones has not been without controversy. Fireworks hold significant emotional value for many individuals, as they are often associated with nostalgic memories of watching them with family. However, for those concerned about the negative effects of fireworks on the environment, the shift to drones is seen as a step in the right direction. Increasing awareness about the benefits of drones or finding ways to produce more eco-friendly fireworks may be key to addressing the environmental impact of traditional pyrotechnics.
While the switch from fireworks to drones may not appeal to everyone, it reflects a growing trend among cities aiming to prioritize environmental and health considerations during festive celebrations. As cities explore alternative methods to continue the tradition of celebrating America's independence, it remains to be seen whether drone light shows will become the new norm for future Independence Day festivities.
