Arizona Cardinals' highly anticipated rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. had a lackluster performance in his NFL debut on Sunday. Despite being on the field for 54 snaps and running 33 routes, Harrison was targeted by quarterback Kyler Murray just three times, resulting in only one catch for four yards. The Cardinals suffered a 34-28 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium.
Following the game, Murray shrugged off concerns about his offensive playmakers not getting enough touches. He stated that as a quarterback, his primary focus is going through his reads and making the best decision based on the situation. Murray attributed the limited involvement of Harrison to the play-calling decisions of offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.
The Cardinals' decision to select Harrison with the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft was aimed at making him the team's primary receiving option. However, in his debut, Murray targeted tight end Trey McBride nine times and receiver Greg Dortch eight times, sidelining Harrison in the passing game.
Furthermore, Murray missed a wide-open Harrison streaking down the field in the final minute of the game, which could have potentially resulted in a game-tying touchdown. The missed opportunity added to the frustration surrounding Harrison's disappointing debut.
Petzing, in his second year as the Cardinals' offensive coordinator, echoed Murray's sentiments and reiterated that it is not the quarterback's responsibility to focus on getting specific players the ball. He stressed that it is his duty to call the plays and create opportunities for each receiver. However, Petzing acknowledged that many of the pass plays are indeed designed with Harrison in mind.
Looking ahead, Murray will have another chance to involve Harrison more prominently in the Cardinals' offense in their upcoming Week 2 matchup against their division rivals, the Los Angeles Rams at State Farm Stadium. The team is hopeful that with improved communication and game planning, Harrison's talent can be properly utilized to contribute to the Cardinals' success.
Although it may have been a disappointing debut for Harrison, it is important to remember that it is just one game in a long NFL season. With time, patience, and adjustments, Harrison has the potential to establish himself as a viable receiving threat for the Cardinals.
