Arizona Cardinals wide receiver, Zay Jones, has been handed a suspension without pay for the first five games of the upcoming NFL season for violating the league's personal conduct policy, according to an announcement made by the league on Friday. Jones is set to be eligible for return after the Cardinals' Week 5 game against the San Francisco 49ers.

The suspension is a result of an incident that occurred on November 13, where Jones was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery after an altercation with the mother of his child that allegedly resulted in an injury to her neck, as stated in an arrest and booking report. It should be noted that the single charge against Jones was dropped in March.

Despite the suspension, Jones had been making strides in establishing himself in Arizona's receiving rotation during the offseason. Anticipated to be a key factor in the Cardinals' passing game, his absence during the initial games will undoubtedly be felt. Coach Jonathan Gannon praised Jones, highlighting his ability to quickly grasp the intricacies of different offenses and play multiple roles.

In the 2023 season, Jones missed eight games due to a knee injury but still managed to record 34 receptions for 321 yards and two touchdowns. These numbers followed a successful previous season where he achieved career highs in receptions (82) and receiving yards (823).

The wide receiver's one-year contract with the Cardinals, signed in May, was reported to be worth up to $2.25 million. This includes a base salary of $1.41 million, with $650,000 guaranteed, and a signing bonus of $500,000. Jones was also entitled to a $20,000 per game roster bonus, capping at $340,000.

The Cardinals will have to navigate through the initial part of the season without the contributions of Zay Jones, but his return after the suspension will undoubtedly boost their offense. The team will now have to rely on other receivers to step up and fill the void during his absence.

ESPN's Michael DiRocco provided additional contributions to this report.
