BOGOTA, Colombia - In a heartfelt tribute to one of its most beloved icons, the city of Barranquilla unveiled a magnificent bronze statue of Colombian pop sensation Shakira. The stunning 20-foot-tall monument captures the essence of the Grammy and Latin Grammy winner, showcasing her iconic belly-dancing outfit and graceful movements.

Located on a newly constructed promenade along the picturesque Magdalena River, the statue was unveiled during a small ceremony on Tuesday. Among the attendees were Shakira's parents, as well as the Mayor of Barranquilla, Jaime Pumarejo.

The commemorative plaque beneath the statue beautifully describes the impact Shakira has made on the world. It states, "On Feb. 2, 1977, the town of Barranquilla and the world witnessed the birth of a heart that composes, hips that don't lie, a voice that moves masses, and a pair of bare feet that walk for the good of children and humanity."

This impressive bronze giant is not the first Shakira statue in Barranquilla. Back in 2006, the city unveiled another statue depicting the pop star in her early days, playing an acoustic guitar while dressed in jeans and boots. This statue proudly stands near the entrance of the local soccer stadium.

Shakira expressed her gratitude for the latest statue in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. She thanked the sculptor Yino Marquez and the students of Barranquilla's public art academy for their remarkable artistic talent showcased in the creation of the statue.

The Colombian pop star, who has won multiple Latin Grammys, continues to make waves in the music industry. Earlier this year, she triumphed at the Latin Grammy Awards, taking home three prestigious awards. Moreover, Shakira made headlines in January with her collaboration with Bizarrap on "Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53." This fiery rap song, which explored her past relationship with Gerard Pique, shattered records on YouTube.

The statue of Shakira stands as a testament to her enduring legacy and the pride of Barranquilla's citizens. It symbolizes the immense talent and success of a global superstar who hails from the vibrant streets of Colombia.
