The New York Yankees have made a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, acquiring left-hander Clayton Andrews in exchange for minor league righty Joshua Quezada. The deal was announced on Wednesday by both teams.

The Yankees have added Andrews to their roster, while also transferring right-handed pitcher Scott Effross to the 60-day injured list. Effross is currently recovering from back surgery, which was only recently announced.

Andrews, 27, made his major league debut with the Brewers in 2023, although his performance was not up to par. In just 3 1/3 innings, he allowed ten earned runs, including three home runs. However, Andrews showcased more promising results during his time in the minors. He spent the majority of the 2023 season with the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate in Nashville, where he maintained an impressive 2.53 ERA in 57 relief appearances. Andrews struck out 31.1% of opposing batters and had a solid 45.7% groundball rate. However, his walk rate of 13% needs improvement for him to solidify his spot in the big leagues.

Selected in the 17th round of the 2018 draft by the Brewers, Andrews still has two minor league option years remaining. This provides the Yankees with valuable bullpen depth and flexibility. Andrews is a left-handed pitcher with a three-pitch repertoire, averaging 94.8 mph on his fastball in 2023. He also incorporates a changeup and a slider, with his changeup being his most effective pitch. This resulted in reverse splits in 2023, as right-handed hitters struggled against him, batting just .215/.312/.349, while fellow lefties had a healthier .233/.337/.438 slash line.

On the other side of the trade, the Brewers have acquired 19-year-old righty Joshua Quezada, who is entering his second professional season. Quezada, signed by the Yankees from Nicaragua during last year's international amateur free agency period, spent his debut season with the Yankees' short-season affiliate in the Dominican Summer League. In 46 1/3 innings, he recorded a 3.69 ERA. Standing at 6'2" and weighing 185 pounds, Quezada struck out 25% of his opponents and had a 9.4% walk rate. Although not considered one of the Yankees' top prospects, Quezada's impressive debut campaign will provide the Brewers with an intriguing young arm to develop in the lower levels of their system.

The trade between the Yankees and Brewers gives both teams an opportunity to add depth, potential, and flexibility to their respective rosters. Only time will tell how Andrews and Quezada will contribute to their new teams in the future.
