In a surprising turn of events, Washington's offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb, has announced that he will not be replacing Kalen DeBoer as the Huskies' head coach. This decision has sparked speculation that Grubb will follow DeBoer to Alabama instead.
Taking to social media to share the news, Grubb expressed his desire to take on the head coaching role at the University of Washington but confirmed that it would not be happening. This announcement has opened the door for Grubb to join DeBoer at Alabama, where he is expected to serve as the offensive coordinator for the Tide, according to ESPN.
The move to Alabama seems to be a natural progression for Grubb, considering his extensive background working alongside DeBoer. Grubb previously served as DeBoer's offensive line coach and run-game coordinator at NAIA Sioux Falls from 2007 to 2009 before moving on to become the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2010 to 2013. He then followed DeBoer to Eastern Michigan, where he served as the offensive line coach from 2014 to 2016. Grubb continued his journey with DeBoer at Fresno State from 2017 to 2021, gradually taking on more significant roles such as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
During his time as Washington's offensive coordinator in recent years, Grubb has played a pivotal role in the team's success. In 2022, under Grubb's leadership, the Huskies' offense ranked second in the FBS in yards per game and seventh in points per game. In the following year, they maintained their strong performance, finishing 12th in yards per game and 13th in points per game.
Interestingly, Grubb had previously been considered a candidate for an opening at Alabama when Bill O'Brien left to become the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator last winter. However, Grubb ultimately decided to remain at Washington, and Tommy Rees was hired for the position instead. Now, with the opportunity to join DeBoer at Alabama, Grubb seems poised to make the move.
DeBoer wasted no time in organizing his staff at Alabama and emphasized the importance of allowing his coordinators to choose their own assistants. The goal is to build a cohesive team that can work well together to retain the current players on Alabama's roster.
As Grubb's departure to Alabama potentially looms, the future of Tommy Rees, the offensive coordinator currently under contract with Alabama, remains uncertain. The Tide currently have six assistant coaches under contract, including Rees.
Washington's coaching staff during DeBoer and Grubb's tenure included individuals such as JaMarcus Shephard, Lee Marks, Scott Huff, and Nick Sheridan. Their work culminated in winning the Joe Moore Award for the nation's top offensive line.
Ryan Grubb, a 48-year-old Iowa native, had a successful football career, playing at Division III Buena Vista in the 1990s.
