The Washington Commanders have made another significant move this offseason as they continue to revamp their organization. On Friday, the team announced the hiring of Adam Peters, former assistant general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, as the new lead executive to oversee their front office.
The decision to bring in Peters was confirmed by CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. This move comes shortly after Washington reportedly narrowed down its search for a new head of football operations to Peters and Ian Cunningham, assistant GM of the Chicago Bears, who had also been interviewed.
Peters, 44, brings valuable experience to the Commanders, having spent the last three seasons as the right-hand man to 49ers GM John Lynch. During his time in San Francisco, Peters played a key role in drafting and acquiring important players such as quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey. Prior to his promotion as assistant GM, Peters served as the team's vice president of player personnel from 2017 to 2020. Under his guidance, the 49ers reached three NFC Championships and appeared in a Super Bowl.
While Martin Mayhew currently holds the position of GM for the Commanders, Peters will now be responsible for organizing and leading the front office. There is a possibility that both Mayhew and Marty Hurney, former GM of the Carolina Panthers and currently the executive vice president of football personnel, may be reassigned or replaced in the restructuring process.
Peters' extensive experience in title-contending teams will undoubtedly benefit the Commanders as they continue their search for a new head coach following Ron Rivera's dismissal. Prior to his time with the 49ers, Peters spent eight years with the Denver Broncos, where he worked as a scout and then as director of college scouting. He played a crucial role in identifying future Pro Bowlers such as Justin Simmons and Chris Harris. Peters began his NFL career as a scout for the New England Patriots, contributing to their success in winning two Super Bowls from 2003 to 2008.
With Peters now leading the front office, it is expected that his background will influence the Commanders' top targets for their head coaching position. One potential candidate that Washington has expressed interest in is Bobby Slowik, the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. Slowik previously worked with Peters under Kyle Shanahan during their time with the 49ers.
The addition of Adam Peters to the Commanders' front office marks another significant step in the offseason overhaul for Washington. With his wealth of experience and success in building competitive teams, Peters brings a valuable perspective that will undoubtedly shape the future of the organization.
