EAGAN, Minn. - Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Wes Phillips was arrested on Friday night and charged with misdemeanor operation of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, according to Hennepin County jail records.
The arrest occurred at 11 p.m. CT in suburban Minneapolis, as stated in the records. Phillips was released at 1:26 a.m. CT after posting a $300 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 21. Detailed information about the incident has not been disclosed at this time.
The Vikings, who are set to travel to Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon, are preparing to face the Raiders on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium.
Following the arrest, the Vikings issued a statement that said, "Wes immediately notified the team following his arrest last night. This morning we contacted the NFL, and after internal discussion, made the decision Wes will travel with the team to Las Vegas this afternoon. We will continue to gather information regarding the incident and have further comment at the appropriate time."
Wes Phillips, 44, joined the Vikings as offensive coordinator in 2022, being one of coach Kevin O'Connell's initial hires. Previously, Phillips had worked alongside O'Connell on the coaching staff of the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 and 2021. In his 17th NFL season, Phillips has also served with Washington and Dallas, accumulating a wealth of experience. He comes from a football dynasty, being the son of legendary coach Wade Phillips and the grandson of Bum Phillips.
This arrest adds an unfortunate blemish to the Vikings' preparations for the upcoming game against the Raiders. The team will have to navigate through the controversy surrounding Phillips as they aim for a successful performance on Sunday. The Vikings organization, along with the NFL, will likely conduct a thorough investigation into the matter to determine the appropriate course of action.
As the story develops, updates will be provided regarding any new information that emerges regarding the incident and its potential impact on Phillips' position with the team.
