T.J. Watt and Joey Porter Jr. Named Finalists for AP Awards
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt has been recognized as one of the five finalists for the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year award. This comes as no surprise, as Watt's outstanding performance this season earned him numerous accolades.
Watt was already selected as the 101 Awards AFC Defensive Player of the Year for 2023, marking the third time in his career he has won the honor. He was also named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-NFL and All-AFC teams, solidifying his status as one of the top defenders in the league. Additionally, Watt received the prestigious title of First Team Associated Press All-Pro for the fourth time in his career.
His dominance on the field is evident, as teammate Minkah Fitzpatrick describes him as "a very dominant force" and a "game-wrecker." Watt led the NFL in sacks this season with a total of 19, the second-highest of his career. This is also the third time he has led the league in sacks, making him the only player in NFL history to achieve this feat. In fact, Watt's exceptional performance resulted in him breaking the Steelers' all-time sack record, surpassing James Harrison's record with 81.5 career sacks.
Meanwhile, cornerback Joey Porter Jr., a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has emerged as a standout rookie. His impressive performance on the field earned him a spot as one of the five finalists for the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Porter's dedication and competitive mindset have caught the attention of Coach Mike Tomlin, who commended him for his growth and solid performance.
Porter's rookie season saw him make crucial contributions to the Steelers' defense. He recorded 42 tackles, including 32 solo stops, along with 10 passes defensed, an interception against the Baltimore Ravens, and a tackle for a loss. His consistent improvement led to a starting role for the team starting from Week 8.
Although Porter did not enter the season as a starter, his playing time gradually increased, showcasing his potential and versatility. His inclusion in the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team further validates his impact on the field.
It is evident that both Watt and Porter Jr. have made significant contributions to the Steelers' defense this season. As finalists for these prestigious AP awards, they have solidified their positions among the league's best defenders. The winners of the awards will be announced at a later date, but their performances throughout the season have already made a lasting impact.
