In a stunning move that sent shockwaves through the baseball world, superstar Shohei Ohtani recently agreed to a groundbreaking ten-year, $700MM deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. While this record-setting contract initially raised concerns about the club's luxury tax payroll, reported deferrals in Ohtani's contract could significantly alleviate the financial burden on the Dodgers.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Major League Baseball applies a discount to deferrals when calculating luxury tax purposes. As "most of" Ohtani's contract is expected to be deferred, Passan suggests that the actual luxury tax hit for the Dodgers could range between $40MM and $50MM, instead of the previously estimated $70MM. Although these numbers are not yet finalized, they could substantially impact the Dodgers' luxury tax bill throughout Ohtani's tenure with the team.

If the luxury tax hit for the 2024 season were to decrease to approximately $45MM, the Dodgers' luxury tax payroll would be around $219MM. This would allow the team to add up to $50MM in payroll before even matching their 2023 luxury tax payroll. Furthermore, the Dodgers would have nearly $75MM of financial room before reaching their all-time high, providing ample flexibility to bolster their roster.

While the addition of Ohtani undoubtedly strengthens the Dodgers' lineup alongside Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, the team's primary concern this offseason lies in improving their pitching staff. In 2023, the Dodgers' pitching staff ranked in the middle of the pack with a 4.06 ERA (13th in the majors) and a 4.23 FIP (15th in the majors). With the uncertainty surrounding Walker Buehler's return from injury, the Dodgers are in need of a durable, front-of-the-rotation arm.

Fortunately for the Dodgers, Ohtani's reasonable luxury tax hit opens up opportunities to pursue top-of-the-market options in free agency. One notable name in the free agent starting pitching market is NPB star Yoshinobu Yamamoto, whom the Dodgers are rumored to be interested in. In addition, the market features pitchers like Blake Snell, the 2023 NL Cy Young award winner, and World Series champion Jordan Montgomery. The second tier of available starting pitchers includes intriguing options such as Shota Imanaga, Marcus Stroman, and Lucas Giolito. With the financial flexibility provided by Ohtani's contract deferrals, the Dodgers have a greater chance of bolstering their rotation for the upcoming 2024 season.

Dodgers fans can now be optimistic about their team's ability to make significant roster improvements, thanks to the deferrals in Ohtani's contract. This unexpected financial flexibility could prove to be a game-changer for the Dodgers as they aim to maintain their competitive edge in the years to come.
