In a disappointing 28-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks' defensive woes were on full display. Allowing eight plays of at least 25 yards, the Seahawks' defense proved to be porous, contributing to their overall ranking of 28th in total defense and 25th against the pass.

Coach Pete Carroll, known for his composed demeanor, did not hold back in his postgame comments, expressing frustration with the team's performance. Carroll referred to the defensive lapses as "bad ball," emphasizing that the coaching staff had prepared diligently to counter the 49ers' offensive threats.

Three plays in particular highlighted Seattle's defensive breakdowns. Deebo Samuel's 54-yard touchdown on a deep crossing pattern, Christian McCaffrey's 72-yard stretch run off tackle, and George Kittle's 44-yard touchdown catch were all mentioned by Carroll as plays that the defense failed to effectively halt.

"We gave it to them. Kittle in short yardage, in a play-action pass, their heavy personnel. He's been doing that for his whole career," Carroll remarked, underlining the missed execution by his team.

Carroll did not shy away from naming specific players whom he believed fell short in their performances. Talking about the deep crossing pattern play, he referenced safety Jamal Adams, who was beaten by Samuel on the route. Additionally, Carroll mentioned Julian Love's error in falling for a fake handoff, allowing Kittle to make his touchdown catch.

During his radio show on KIRO-AM the following morning, Carroll reiterated his call-out of Adams and Love, making it clear that they were aware of their shortcomings. Adams, who was acquired through a blockbuster trade that cost the Seahawks multiple draft picks and Bradley McDougald, has yet to live up to expectations, earning the dubious distinction of being involved in one of the worst trades in NFL history.

Since joining the Seahawks, Adams has struggled with injuries, missing 29 out of 34 games. The once Pro Bowl safety hasn't received the honor since 2020, further fueling criticisms of the trade and the large contract extension he received before the 2021 season. With Adams currently being the third-highest paid safety in the league, the pressure to perform and make an impact on the Seahawks' struggling defense only intensifies.

As the season progresses, it remains to be seen how the Seahawks' defense will address these issues and improve their overall performance. The clock is ticking for Coach Carroll and the team to find a solution and regain their defensive prowess of years past.
